30. IdeaSpark*: Laptop Alarm November 9, 2006Posted by Matt Fleming, PsyD in IdeaSpark*, Product.
What is it? A cheap device that will sound an alarm if your armed laptop is moved.
Who would use it? Any one using a laptop in a public setting (library, coffee shop, etc) that wants to confidently step away from their laptop for a moment (e.g. to go to the bathroom or buy a drink).
How does it work? This florescent USB device will plug into your laptop, which detects it. You can arm the alarm by hitting an icon on your desktop (a detering obnoxious screensaver will indicate the laptop is alarmed), and then disarm it by entering a password. The device will be motion sensitive (it could contain a cheap mercury switch, or it lays on the table with a depressed switch). Any movement of the laptop without disarming the alarm will result in a loud programmed audio alarm (“Alert! This laptop is being stolen!”).
This IdeaSpark* could eventually be integrated directly into certain laptops as a feature, but until then, it will have to be a USB attachment.
