41. IdeaSpark*: Restaurant Menus 2.0 November 14, 2006

First off, I think all menus should have pictures of the food on it, so I know what I am getting. If there are no pictures, I usually end up taking the longest route to the bathroom so I can check out what the other folks are eating.

And, I want the average ratings for each of the dishes listed, on a scale of 1-5. These ratings will be the average score from the last 20 patrons that have tasted that particular dish. This dynamic rating technique will encourage each patron to vote (since their vote counts more), and will also adjust over time in relation to how that dish has been prepared recently (because the dish can change, depending on the cook, ingredients, consistency problems, etc).

This will be easy to accomplish. At the end of the meal, the waiter will ask, “How was the lasagna?” and each person at the table who tasted it will hold up 1-5 fingers. All that is required of the waiter is a quick scan and jotting down of the numbers.

Each day or week, a new menu section is printed out, with the refreshed ratings (and perhaps the new daily/weekly specials). The part of the menu that has the pictures doesn’t change.

This is Interactive Dining. Because of the rating system, Amazon customers will love this place. People like to be heard. People like to know what they are ordering. People like to share food with each other, discuss, and be critics. I would eat here.

Yet, to a naive sparkbugg like me, it seems like it can be so easy. Oh, well. Once I get $300,000 to invest, I guess I can put up or shut up.
