573. Bright Idea: the Fusion Dining Pool Table February 26, 2008

I don’t know about you folks, but my wife and I use our dining table about 3 times a year, when we get around to having a dinner party. Otherwise, we eat on our kitchenette every night.

So that is why I think this dining table, which converts into a pool table, is a Bright Idea. Finally use your dining room more frequently. Add a ping-pong tabletop addition, and you will use that room even more. Check all the versions out HERE; via BornRich.

Made by the Dutch company Stokke, this chair’s name in English doesn’t have good connotations. But, the chair brilliantly adjusts as your child grows, always keeping your child at the perfect height at the family table. You can also purchase cushions, baby rails, and harnesses. Use it for 12 years, or more, for the same child. Stokke’s website HERE; buy it HERE ($199).

Free standing or wall-mounted, this bedside table is a Bright Idea for three reasons:

  1. Neatly holds your magazines and bedside reading.
  2. Obscures the other clutter.
  3. Has no sharp corners to poke your head and eye against in the dark.

Good design can make life neater and safer. Buy it HERE (€400); via Freshome.

This compact chair and desk hybrid actually provides solid ergonomic value since it is fully adjustable (find the perfect height and angle for you your laptop). It would be perfect for crowded places providing free WiFi (libraries and coffee shops). It is relatively inexpensive at $98, but I think you need Yen to buy it HERE; via UberGizmo.

This coffee table contains a PC and 19″ LCD under the surface, and has arcade controls, a trackball, and WiFi connectivity. Play movies, music, slideshows, or the preloaded 29 Taito arcade games with your guests without leaving your living room couch. It would be even better if the screen could tilt forward and the controls were removable and remote. Check more out HERE ($6600); via BornRich.

Below is a well-made 3.5 minute video with high production value and my type of music.

This bookshelf is not exactly groundbreaking, but I like the looks, and would enjoy matching the varying sized compartments with similarly sized contents. Or I would rather save the $1800 it costs to buy one. Yes, $1800. And no, it is not made out of gold-laminated compressed dodo feathers. Via SwissMiss.

The chair on the left separates into a lower rocker chair, and a rolling side table/foot stool/laptop desk/seating for a friend. Unique, and potentially useful for dorms and hip offices. But I still want my arm rests. The Trey Chair starts $240; their website HERE; via OhGizmo!

It is hard to make a rocking chair that looks cool, but I think this one gets pretty close. Seems like it has a bonus reading light, but the chair loses points for not having arm rests. Via MoCoLoco.

There are many versions of lift top coffee tables out there, all of which are Bright Ideas. Not only can you access the hidden internal storage without having to clear off the top, but you have an instant chest-high surface to eat off of. These two pictured tables are stylish as well (above is $580; buy it HERE; below is $800; buy it HERE; via Freshome).

A somewhat Bright Idea, but it looks like a weapon (The Dual-Spear Shield), and is expensive ($50). Buy it HERE; via SciFiTech.

IdeaSpark*: have the backrest be made out of fabric. It will be more comfortable, and the entire thing can roll up like a scroll for easy carrying. And have the spikes of death retract into the supporting poles, for safety and increased portability.

This award-winning chair is for 6 week – 14 month old babies. However, since it is only one size, it won’t always be a snug fit (my friend has one). It is also pricey for a piece of foam ($40).

IdeaSpark*: They should make another inflatable version, with a solid base. This way, it will always provide a cozy fit, and can continue to accommodate your growing child.

Buy one HERE. To see one in action, check out this amusing video stop-motion clip. Via RGS.

These two mirrors happen to be quite stylish and visually appealing. But what makes them a Bright Idea is that they are cut from the same piece of wood. With a little planning, Paul Loebach was able to double his production and limit his waste. Good for him, good for us, and good for the earth. Check out his website HERE; via MoCoLoCo.

Perfect for couples; now you can have good coversation while rocking, staying in sync with solid eye-contact and sharing a drink.

This rocker should also have attached footrests, so individuals can alternate who is rocking, and who is kickin’ back and chilling, being rocked like a baby.

Buy it HERE (price not listed; i.e. crazy expensive). Via ProductDose.

People sit on stairs all the time, especially on nice days. Mark Reigelman’s art installation in front of Brooklyn’s Borough Hall adds colorful aesthetic appeal to the drab monotony of this building’s facade and steps, and gives you and your friend a place to put down your lunches. Another person can even use it as a back rest. I think most large public staircases should have permanent similar additions. Via Core77.
